The
Fall River Mills Airport was originally a dirt strip used by
the Red River Lumber Co of Westwood. It was located directly
behind what is now the Double S Automotive building.
In the mid 1940's the airport was taken
over by Nellie Dunbar and her husband, who started a flight
school. This was an ideal time for this endeavor, since many
returning Vets were able to use their GI benefits for flight
training. Many local residents also tried their hand at
flying.
In the later 40's the Dunbars transferred
the property to the county. Over the years, the airport has
been maintained and upgraded, largely due to funding provided
from the California Aid to Airports Program.
Today the airport has a modern 5000'
lighted runway. taxiways, 9 bay hanger building with restrooms
and pilots lounge and self service fuel dispensing.
